EU AFIR Regulation: New Boost for Photovoltaic System Providers?

The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Regulation (AFIR) is often read as a regulation for public charging infrastructure. That is too narrow a view. In reality, it also changes the expectations for private wall boxes – and thus for a component that is becoming increasingly important for photovoltaic system providers.
The EU does not prescribe any end-customer functionality for photovoltaic surplus charging or bidirectional charging. However, it makes the underlying communication capability the new standard: From January 1, 2027, the EN ISO 15118-20, which becomes mandatory as part of AFIR, will be relevant for new private charging points. It standardizes the communication between vehicle and charging point, thereby creating a reliable basis for smart charging.
For photovoltaic system providers, this represents a market opportunity. Because anyone investing in a photovoltaic system today thinks in terms of use cases: charging the electric car with solar power, optimizing self-consumption, and long-term flexibility from vehicle battery use.
